Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking is seen very often in individuals with disabilities. No matter how much you pull their thumb out of their mouth, they seem to stick it back in. Thumb sucking can affect the development of your permanent teeth, and in some cases, speech. You may need to visit an orthodontist to reverse the damages.

Home Treatment:

  • Caregivers can provide distraction
  • Rewarding for not thumb sucking- Try stickers
  • Positive praise
  • Put lemon Juice or vinegar on their thumb
  • Try giving them a  pacifier
  • Never use yelling or negative reinforcement

If home treatment doesn’t work:

Talk to your doctor about behavior therapy or other devices to prevent thumb sucking.
