A lot of individuals with special needs are G-Tube fed. Some of these individuals do not consume any food by mouth and some partially consume by mouth. Either way, it is really important that you still brush their teeth and take care of their oral health. They can still get cavities even if they are not eating anything by mouth.
In this population, it is really common that these individuals have a lot of calculus build up on their teeth. This calculus is usually formed since these individuals are not producing a lot of saliva as a result of not consuming food by mouth. This calculus can really only be cleaned by a dental professional. But not to worry, some say that the calculus is actually helping protect these teeth from cavities. So make sure you are taking your loved one to the dentist every six months so they can help remove calculus and ensure that there are no cavities.
