Cerebral Palsy

Oral Manifestations for Individuals with Cerebral Palsy Include:

  • Increased risk for cavities
  • Increased risk for periodontal disease aka gum disease
  • Increased risk of trauma or injury
  • Delayed eruption of permanent teeth
  • Enamel Hypoplasia: the outer layer of the teeth might appear more opaque than the rest of the teeth
  • Erosion: due to gastric reflux, this can lead to sensitivity with hot or cold food/liquids
  • Grinding
  • Oral Hypersensitivity
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Hyperactive gag reflex: this might make brushing and taking x-rays really difficult
